Just found out I’m pregnant. I dislike my job, and I planned to go part-time once baby comes. What should I do

I really liked my job for the first year. I knew that when I had my baby, I could go part-time since I liked the job and it would give me some flexibility. Now, in my second year, I strongly dislike it. I like the company, but my immediate two supervisors are not very good, and the job has become painful. It has become very inflexible, monotonous, and draining. I have two degrees which give me options for obtaining a new job, if I wish to begin a new job search. I just know that in about four or five months, I am only going to want to work part-time. I can’t accept a new full-time postion and then quit or go part-time in such a short period of time. I could search for part-time jobs or keep my current job. I am so confused! Going to work each day is taking a toll on my personal well-being and my marriage. I need some help… What should I do?

  1. If you can afford to just get a parttime job starting now, I would definitely do it. I was teaching full time when I became pregnant and was sooo exhausted – even on the half days. Luckily school only lasted for a few more weeks after I became pregnant, and I was very very happy to get to stay home for the summer. I am now 20 weeks pregnant and only working part time and even that is a pain to me! I know plenty of women are perfectly fine working full time while pregnant, but if you can afford not to, why do it, especially considering your dilemma?

  2. If your hubby is able to support you, himself and the baby, why not stay home? There is nothing wrong with it at all.

    37 weeks with #2

  3. i’d say keep it. now with all that you have going on, i wouldn’t add extra stress.

once you have your baby, the job will just be a thing to do anyway b/c your baby will be the biggest joy.

after you are more established with the baby and your routine, life, etc… then i would search. you may completely change focus by then.

  4. Would you consider working part time at your current job? would that make it more bearable? If not I’d search for another part time job elsewhere. If you get morning sickness in a couple of weeks, you’ll be glad to have some extra time to rest. Best of luck.

  5. You could sell Mary Kay Cosmetics. This will allow you to go to school, full or part-time and work, full or part-time or you can just sell the products as your main source of income. I sell the wonderful product this company makes and I have 2 other part-time jobs and I take classes at a local technical college. I am also a mommy of a 2 and 4 year old.

  6. In addition to what others have already mentioned, do keep in mind that there is no guarantee that your next job will be any better. Especially for part-time job, the number of rewarding (both financially and intrinsically) jobs gets much smaller.

Not to encourage you, but even though an employer cannot turn you down due to your status of being pregnant, many may still come up with excuses not to hire you as well.

Seems to me you are ready to quit, so It may not be a bad idea to talk to your boss and see if s/he has any suggestions. If s/he wants to keep you enough, then an alternative solution (other than quitting) may be possible to better accomodate your needs.

That’s just my two cents. Good luck :-)
