First ever job interview coming up! Tips?
Oct 5th, 2011 | By admin | Category: Interview TipsOk, so I have an interview for a video store, which specialises in arty/foreign films as well as mainstream ones.
I enjoy film, it’s something of a passion of mine. I got an interview out of heaps of applicants because of my outstanding results in Media Studies, and the fact that I am genuinely passionate about movies.
But I will be up against people who probably have that, AND who have work experience, most likely!
How do I stand out?
I’ve no work experience, because I’ve just finished high school and I’ve been focussing on my grades, however I need one at Uni and honestly this is the part time job of my dreams, haha.
So, tips! How do I make them pick me?
There were a lot of applicants but it’s only a small town video store, so how many will I be up against?
Please help! All advice is greatly welcomed!
i have had a similar problem and all they will do is ask u some questions from ur resume to see if u truely wrote it or you searched ideas off the internet
don’t be nervous
Study their business. If they have a website….then research their site and find out what they are about, what their goals are and what they plan to achieve. When they see that you have done your homework and that you are confident you will more than likely get the job. In regards to the confident part this is a must!
Be honest and forthright. If you do not know something you are asked, say so (but ready to learn!). Make sure your enthusiasm/passion about being in that film environment comes through. Be yourself/genuine, don’t put on airs. They know from seeing your resume you are out of high school.
Say you are following in the footsteps of Quentin Tarantino, who worked at a video store with Roger Avary, his friend and future co-writer of Pulp Fiction! This store is the environment you want to be in at this point in your life, and that you will do all you can to give back in the passion you will exude while working.
I don’t think there is anything you need to learn prior to working a video store. If you are good with people, that is all you need. All else you will learn on the job, so don’t think others have such an advantage over you with their prior jobs.
If you want, you can mention that you are aware of your youth and lack of work experience, but you are mature, want to learn, know the field (film), and will not let them down.
