Entry Level Job with Special Needs?
Jan 31st, 2011 | By admin | Category: Finding a Job in Day CareI am a senior in high school. I am staying home for the first 2 years of college. I am a Special Education major. I am looking into a part time job with special needs. I would prefer if it were year round but it would be okay if it were seasonal. I live in the suburbs of Chicago. How would I go about finding a job like this. I am open to anything! Day care for special needs anything. I already help with these type of kids at my school. I help in their gym class as a gym credit. I would also be learning about this when I would go to school. Anything you could find would be helpful.
look into subbing. Some districts might not require a degree to work hey might require a few hours of college work. Also look into working at camps during summer and holiday breaks. I know there are several summer camps. Day cares may not hire you without a degree in education.
Firstly, congratulations on choosing a very rewarding and exciting career.
I teach in the far north suburbs of Chicago and live in the west suburbs. I would recommend looking into special education associations in your area that may offer part-time positions (WDRSA comes to mind if you are anywhere near western DuPage county – http://www.wdrsa.com). I’d also recommend you contact your local district’s special education department. Explain to them that you are planning to study special education and ask if they have any contacts of organizations in your local area that might be interested.
Although you’ve mentioned you are looking for a paid job, there are lots of volunteer opportunities to work in schools. I would highly recommend this, even if you’re not going to be paid. Even if you only go for maybe a morning or afternoon a week to a local school, you will gain a wealth of knowledge about special education practices and procedures. It will really help come time to take your special education classes in college.
Good luck.
In response to another poster, I just wanted to let you know that you will not be able to sub at this time. Law in Illinois requires that sub teachers have the minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
